Treats
Tired of punch and cookies as a treat?
Let's all share ideas of that special treat when everyone asks for seconds or wants the recipe.
Do tell us if the treat is connected to a book, a program theme, party, etc.
1. Work with frozen white bread that is thawed just enough for you to be able to cut and not
smash the bread
.
2. Spread margarine or butter very liberally on all the bread slices.

3. Cut the crust off each slice and then cut it into three strips. You could cut circles or other
shapes, if desired.

4. Sprinkle each strip with colored sugar crystals.

5. Cover until served to keep the bread from drying out.

6. Make sure you make enough so there can be seconds and thirds!

Australian Birthday Treat
I lead a group discussion about a story set in Australian and there was even a birthday mentioned. When
I found this recipe, I was really excited because it was so easy and was an authentic Australian birthday
treat. The kids loved it. Did I mention all the extra things I learned about Australia while I was looking,
looking and looking for a treat?
Caramel Popcorn
(It's not sticky!)
shared by Marie Wilkes
Melt 2 cubes of margarine or butter in pan.
Add:
1/2 cup corn syrup
2 cups brown sugar
2 tsp salt
Mix well and boil 5 minutes, add 2 tsp vanilla.
Pour mix over 8 quarts popped popcorn, stir to blend.
Spread popcorn mix in shallow pans.
Place in 200 degree over for 45 minutes, stirring every 15 minutes.

This is a great treat to remind us of pilgrims of so long ago who would not have survived their first winter
in our country had not the Native Americans, among other things,
showed the ill-prepared newcomers how to plant and harvest corn.
What a Thanksgiving Day they had.
They didn't have popcorn then but we do and we love it.
Enjoy!

White Chocolate Peppermint Bark
10 regular size candy canes
2 pounds white melting chocolate
1 cup meltling chocolate, or more, if desired

1. Line a cookie sheet with waxed paper.

2. Put candy canes in a heavy-duty zip-top plastic bag and crush with a hammer or rolling pin into
1/4" pieces.

3. In a double boiler with hot water, melt the white chocolate; stir in the crushed candy, reserving
1/4 cup of candy.

4. Pour white chocolate mix into the cookie sheet, spreading around into a even layer.

5. Sprinkle the top of mix with the reserved candy pieces, drizzle melted chocolate on top.
This is a easy treat to give friends, teachers, neighbors at Christmastime.
Kids will do an outstanding job "preparing" the candy canes!
Have a great Christmas!
